A complete loss of the plot

Post by chadders » Fri Nov 22, 2019 7:25 pm

I've just been reading a test of the new Audi s8, more than a bit out of my price bracket.
The thing that struck me the most was that the cylinder on demand technology and the 48v starter motor and lithium ion regen combo saves about 0.2mpg!
So for that saving you probably have to write it off if it plays up at a few years old. This is the same completely disjointed thinking that will apparently stop city cars being built as they can't economically be produced to meet eu consumption regs whereas hybrid SUVs, which use a lot more fuel, can.

Seems to be another step toward the logical conclusion that cars will soon become just one great big service item. 1950's planned obsolescence painted green. I suppose it will keep the factories running.....

48v systems are mostly designed for crawling in traffic. Which invariably many of us ended up doing.

Why would it write it off if it plays up? Not going to be particularly complicated system and VCDS in time will support diagnostics and coding of it. Probably right about them getting to five years old, when some of them may start needing attention.

I imagine that the cylinder on demand technology would be the most complicated bit.
For a 0.2mpg saving it seems farcical to me.

I don't suppose the sales literature mentioned the rare earths, toxic materials and plastic required to 'save' fuel and cut exhaust pipe emissions.

Nor the fact that most of the Lithium comes from that well known paragon of human rights China, also well known for its clean* green* environmentally friendly mining and processing of said metal..

Cease car manufacture for 10 years. That'll sort it out.

Nobody will be throwing cars away then. Everything will have a value, the price of spares will drop and anyone who loses their job making cars and bits will be in a garage fixing stuff.

We should start an import company to get 504’s back from Central African Republic.

Are the 404/504s not being largely phased out now due to lack of spares and abysmal mpg compared to newer vehicles?

Yeah right, those Chinese built Toyotas and Hyundai’s will all be broken soon and sense seen.
