FELT THE NEED FOR SPEED

*COURT REPORT*

Dangerous driver's vehicle seized after 140mph speeding offence in Sussex

A dangerous driver claimed he felt the “need for speed” when he drove off from police at speeds of 140mph in Worthing, Shoreham and Washington.

Michael Shorter, 33, was seen driving in a BMW away from officers on November 27 last year.

He drove so quickly that several specialist officers from the Roads Policing Unit were required to locate him and safely bring the vehicle to a stop after a pursuit over ten miles.

During the prolonged incident he failed to stop for police, reaching high speeds of 130mph in a 50mph zone and 95mph in a 40mph zone, overtaking vehicles on a blind bend, and undertaking vehicles on A27 at 100mph.

Eventually RPU officers were able to stop his vehicle, and Shorter, of The Glen, Salvington, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and resisting arrest.

Shorter told officers he had a “need for speed” and claimed his reason for driving away from officers was because he “panicked” about having nine points already endorsed on his driving licence.

He claimed: “All I was doing was driving fast, I got scared.”

Excess speed is one of the “fatal five” causes of people being killed or seriously injured on our roads.

At Hove Crown Court on January 7, Shorter admitted dangerous driving and failing to stop.

Judge Roger Chapple sentenced Shorter to a six-month suspended prison sentence, 150 hours of unpaid work, and disqualified him from driving for two years.

Shorter’s vehicle was seized and the judge made a deprivation order under the Sentencing Act 2020 which means he will be deprived of his rights to the vehicle.

He was also ordered to pay £425 court costs and a £128 surcharge.

RPU officer PC Tom Bezants, investigating, said Shorter’s driving was “dangerous” and said: “It is only down to luck that nobody was killed by his lack of regard for the safety of himself, his passenger or other road users.”

PC Bezants said Shorter had driven away from police at high speed, to the point where officers pursuing him at 140mph made no ground in catching him.

The pursuit in roads around Worthing and Washington continued for ten miles and lasted for more than an hour and a half.

PC Bezants added: “The safe resolution of this incident involved officers from both the Roads Policing Unit and Tactical Firearms Unit, who worked together showing professionalism to safely bring Shorter to a stop.

“Excess speed is one of the main reasons why people are killed or seriously injured on our roads, and we are determined to stop drivers who put themselves and everyone else at risk.

“This case shows dangerous motorists that they too could lose their licence and their vehicle, and demonstrates our determination to catch offenders to ensure our roads are safe.”

*COURT REPORT*

Brentwood: Man jailed after High Street disturbance

11:44 24/01/2022

Almost five years of complex work by specialist officers has secured the conviction of a man who was behind the wheel of a car which drove over an injured man who lay prone on the ground.

Martin Stokes, 28, has been sentenced after admitting ABH and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The incident took place outside the Sugar Hut, in Brentwood High Street. in the early hours of April 2, 2017.

Stokes, of no fixed address, appeared at Southend Magistrates' Court this morning to be sentenced by Crown Court Judge Samantha Leigh to four years in prison.

The sentencing comes after he was found not guilty of attempted murder and GBH with intent.

Stokes’ victim, then aged in his 20s, had been involved in a large-scale disturbance outside the club and had been knocked out and was laying on the road.

As a result of Stokes’ actions, the man was severely injured and only emergency treatment at the scene could save his life.

Two other people, who were tending to the man on the ground, were also struck. Thankfully their injuries were not serious, but the incident significantly impacted upon their mental health.

Stokes then left the country and could not be located.

However, he was arrested in London in April 2021 and transferred to Essex and charged.

Stokes did not deny being behind the wheel of the Audi Q7 but claimed not to have seen the victim on the ground.

Stokes had attempted to enter the nightclub earlier in the evening but was refused entry because he was wearing trainers. He returned later wearing suitable footwear.

When Stokes leaves the venue, the large-scale disturbance had begun.

Stokes can then be seen involving himself in the incident while the Audi Q7 is seen to be manoeuvring in and around the junction of Crown Street and High Street, before reversing back and coming to a stop on High Street.

At this stage, Stokes’ victim was laying prone on the road.

Stokes is then seen to get into the driver’s side of the vehicle as the previous driver moves into the passenger seat.

Shortly after, the vehicle accelerates toward the group, some of whom have surrounded the man on the ground and strikes them.

Stokes is the eleventh person to be convicted in connection with this incident.

Eight men admitted affray in 2019 and were given suspended prison sentences, fined and were ordered to complete unpaid work totalling 880 hours.

In December 2018 two men were also fined and ordered to carry out unpaid work for affray.

Detective Superintendent Steve Jennings, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said:

“Stokes tried his best to evade justice for his actions for more than four years, until he was arrested in April last year.
“This incident severely impacted Stokes’ victims and has significantly impacted them in the long-term.
“We never stopped pursuing Stokes after he fled the country and, today, he has been sentenced to an appropriate time in custody for his crimes.”
