I can testify from experience that the MGB ones work well, at least in a smash that resulted in a MK1 Escort being written off. At the time I probably weighed about 14 stones so the mounts had a fair bit of stress. My VW T2 rear ones are mounted in a similar fashion, as advised by the seatbelt manufacturer.

The way the belt is mounted is not ideal, but the mounting points are perfectly acceptable and better than a lot of aftermarket stuff from the 80's. Does anyone remember that rear seat belt thing one of the seat belt companies brought out that was just a bar that locked in where the parcel shelf went for hatchbacks. I am sure the name will come to me later. It was probably securon or something as there were loads of aftermarket rear belts available at the time as rear seat belts only became mandatory in 1985.

I know seatbelts are good and usually always wear one when available, but I do like the freedom of movement in cars without them.

I took the belts out of my Minor after 16 years of running the risk of a ticket for not wearing them. The Cowley would be fully impossible to drive belted up - even an inertia reel would not afford sufficient bodily movement to turn the wipers on.

That was a criticism in the road tests. A lovely low down dashboard though. I didn't have any problem reaching the controls on my Series IV; people were generally shorter in stature in those days I think.
