It's not like it was crowded under the bonnet compared to today's motors.

Complete engine ready to drop in? Did they test them before fitting?

Might well have been that. I think Ford's sidevalve had a lifespan of about 25000 miles before it was time for a recon so it would sure make sense on them...

Nice to see a bit of update on the van, this is one of the threads that originally dragged me over here. So for anyone who gets pissed off by my inane wittering, blame Cros.

The Bedford has been cutting out when the engine gets hot in recent months. It restarts immediately after waiting about 30 minutes, might as well buy an electric car if you want that sort of inconvenience.
After checking the usual suspects on the ignition side and eliminating any faults there, I had the carb off and discovered the body was warped.

I gave it a rub on a sheet of Dick Emery and hope the problem is fixed.

When I first started driving it was sometimes in a then new-out Bedford CF.
It had the 1600 version slant 4 engine, and suffered with flat spots. I removed the Zenith carb, which involved unscrewing the in-cab engine cover, and searched in vain for blocked jets- I now wonder if it's taken me 50 years to diagnose the fault? It says on the internet that the manufacturer failed to properly cure some of their castings, the scoundrels.

My Pierburg-encumbered 2.0 Ascona A suffered the same thing. Never did fix that but the carb was a bag of shit in other ways.

Those Pierburg have a terrible reputation, I've never had anything to do with them myself though. The SU is a thing of joy.

I replaced the Pierburg on my Ascona A 1.6S with a Weber 28/36.
Having a manual rather than an automatic choke completely transformed the driveability from cold.

As usual, a Weber was considerably more valuable than my entire Opel.
