Camper fires - does this make sense?

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Camper fires - does this make sense?

Post by LynehamHerc »

I tried to set fire to the camper but fortunately failed.

Last time I took it out I adjusted the heater levers and the speedo stopped working. No big deal, a sticky with the revs at certain speeds was my high tech solution.

Anyway today I thought it was a bit parky about a mile into my run out in it so adjusted the levers again to be met by smoke billowing from the dash. Needless to say I adjusted them back pretty bloody quickly and the smoke then stopped. I'm assuming that the speedo cable is loose and with the levers in a certain position it's flagellating the instrument pod or the back of the speedo.

Given I've got fingers like sausages I thought I'd ask on here first before trying to removed the instrument pod and perform keyhole surgery on the speedo. The heater lever is the one with the red knob and the speedo is to the immediate right of it.

I think it's just catching a live wire when you move it and earthing it out. Can you get your hand up and under the heater lever to feel for any wires close by?

Disconnect the battery first unless it is a VW then let the fucker burn. Seriously though disconnect it and strip out the heater control and look for melted wires. Knowing what they are like for catching fire you really need to find and repair the loom damage.

Thanks guys.
I think I went into one track mind mode and directly linked the speedo failing and the smoke. As you say it makes more sense that one or more wires have been damaged as well.

I've been crawling around in the footwell and suspect it's something to do with the alarm wiring. The firm who installed it made a very untidy job and I couldn't complain as they went bust.
It's also got electric power steering down there along with a feed from the speedo as it's a variable assistance one.

Having a metal dash also probably doesn't help.

I'm going to have a think.

Would it not have been easier to just buy a LDV Pilot?

It would have been easier to buy anything but a Transhit.

Not for me, the missus although it did help a lot after I broke my wrist.

It does make it a lot easier to manoeuvre though so if being called a big poof by the TDW Oracle is the price it's worth paying. Wait until you're old Eddie.

It does look like it's take the piss out of me time, justifiably, as our eldest has just effectively called me an idiot when I told him what happened and my original theory as to the cause.

I used to have a Merc TN1 van with man's steering. Less to go wrong.

I will maintain this position even beyond such time as end up Skechers or Crocs.
