I started mucking it out yesterday as it has some horrid shit inside and a load of spares in the boot which wouldn't open as the release cable was seized. I did have a right bit of luck though as there is a key in the pile of rusty crap that was hiding in the boot. This key fits the ignition and fuel flap so hopefully with a bit of lubrication it will work the door locks as well. So now it can be turned off by the key but as the cable that pulls the starter and the choke cable are both seized it isn't quite able to start without opening the bonnet. Next step is to check out the fuel tank and lines. I am fairly certain it is an alloy tank so might not be too bad it certainly looks ok on the top which is where they usually go. In other news I really shouldn't start picking at the rusty bits as it only leads to more work.

If that's the worst of it I think you've done ok? They are going to be a swine to fabricate though. Do you have the use of an English wheel?

It shouldn't be too bad and I will make it out of about 4 bits. Most of it is hidden by the screen rubber or the alloy trim that runs around below it. All that and a bit of filler will do the job. It has been done before with just filler which obviously lasted a few years as it has been off the road since '93. I need to get the flap disc on the floors to see how good they are as there are a few pin holes in them I suspect. At least it didn't have carpets in it so it's not too bad.

These shouldn't have carpets, IIRC. They should have rubber mats.

What's under those pimples at the base of the screen? Spot welds?

I would guess that there should be some trim that goes under the screen, those pimples look like fillered holes.

Yes they are and there is a trim that covers them and will hopefully hide the major amounts of wob that is going in to tidy up the metal work. It was a right bastard to make the corner of the window frame and not at all pretty. It is currently getting a good covering of wob to get the shape right but it is now solid and there is a lip for the seal to go on now. I also started to polish up the paint. It is not in good condition but does come up with a shine as you can just about see in the pictures.

Well it is all wobbed up and some zinc primer on it that I will give a quick clear coat of laquer over to seal it for now. It looks shit but most of it is covered by the seal and a trim along the spot weld join so it will do for now. It really needs a new panel, maybe I should take and angle grinder to France and chop one up.

I will try and get the screen back in today to tidy it up a bit as the DVLA want it inspected before they will issue a reg number.
