They do have a strong, but small following. Ludlow Green is the best colour IMO. You won't find the Ford name anywhere on one - apparently old Henry didn't like them.

I've always, always wanted one of these. Used to be a guy Slough way (pre-brexit and covid) who imported nice ones of them and flogged them for £1.5k everytime. I should have got one then.
My Slovak mate couldn't understand why I'd want one. To him, these are basically what many on here would think of a Marina or even a Mini.

Indeed, at one time HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother was patron of the Pilot Club - she apparently dearly loved the wood-framed station wagon used on the Royal Estate. I think the Ford name not being visible was fairly commonplace - certainly I don't remember seeing the emblem on the 22HP either for example - just the V8 entwined logo. Henry didn't have long to dislike the Pilot though - he died 4 months before they came out.

I think the world has indeed seen enough of these things now....I preferred the earlier P60, the 600. There were still quite a few of these in use in the Netherlands in the mid-60s - the vicar at my Grandmother's church had one over there. Mind you, he was a bit of a fruitcake.

There were still some Pilots in service when I was a kid, but they were greatly dispised, apparently because of their thirst. I've no idea if this was deserved or because the V8 simply frightened people off, but the fact that they were still working well into the 60's suggests they were pretty robust.

The flathead wasn't a terribly efficient way to set fire to petrol but there wasn't much comparable to the Pilot in this heavily-fuel taxed island - pissy little carbs on under-square low capacity four cylinders weren't necessarily either but didn't encourage throttle useage like the Pilot probably did. V8s generally never seemed to find much favour here.

Actually, there is a probably a neat little connection between that Pilot film and the following clip of the Hants/Surrey heath fires....Apart from those hapless fire-fighters attempting to smash the fire out with beaters (there were little clusters of those all over the New Forest clipped to posts when I was growing up....) there is a very good chance some Ford V8-engined trailer pumps were in attendance as well as Ford NFS tenders.

My mate was showing an interest in that but obviously he spotted something else shiney and didn't buy it. I do know the owner (well we all do), but I will let him tell you all about it if you are interested.
