It was minging when new. Beige and that awful Merc wood is vile.

I may be in a tiny minority here but I very much like big capacity 4 cylinder engines. I believe there is a Porsche which sported one of over 3 litres; unfortunately you have to have it with the car.

All the 3.2 diesel pickups I have driven all feel like they have a sense of urgency that wasn’t matched with any real progress.

I suggest a drive in that 28 liter fiat racer. That was a 4 pot I think.

That's diesels for you. Progress with a nice fat 4 cylinder petrol is just more enjoyable.

Hmmm, that's subjective. For example, I'd certainly take a diesel-engined Discovery over a petrol-engined one for off-road use. And on-road use tbh, if fuel economy* is a factor.

Only had two big four petrols. Sigma 2.6 and a Terrano 2.4. Both gutless, thirsty and pointless.

The Porsche 4 pot is a superb engine, not just in the way it goes but also in the way it was designed and put together. It was probably the last good engine they made.

There's a point up to when cylinder capacity calls for more cylinders.

Mind you a rolls Royce griffon had a single cylinder capacity of over 3 litres although it's not exactly comparing like with like.
(Sorry, I'm in smartarse mode at the moment)

The 1890-1920 period, with their wild experiments, are history.
