£3k then is about £6k now after inflation.

30 year old car equivalent to an E-Type? DB7 probably too rare and special when new compared to a Jag E-Type as the Jag was cheap and affordable new while being made in large quantities.
XK8 maybe? Or XJ-S possibly? Both can be had for under 6k.

True enough, but neither moved the game on much or made the impression on the car world that the E-type did in the early sixties.
It was a huge step up in terms of speed for your money in 1961.

Very much this.

If I could get a decent convertible non Series3 E Type for 30 -40k I'd have one, nothing else to me is worth that money nor the pain I'd have to go through to get the missus to agree to it. Unfortunately it'd be several times that so it's a non starter. It'd mean selling the MGB I've had for 47 years but that wouldn't be a problem, I'd still have the memories related to it. Neither the XK8, XJS or F Type come remotely close.

It's not about numbers, it's all about emotion, which no doubt seems pretty rich coming from an accountant.

That is tempting but being a non runner is a bit concerning. It has also been out of mot 10 years so there could be a lot of other issues. A grand cheaper and I would be sending a truck to get it. I really shouldn't buy any more cars though as I am out of storage until I sell a couple. The Lancia has to go and so will the Rover once it is back from having the sills sorted. I always fancied a P5 3 litre but after driving this auto one over for the welding I found it rather dull. The Lancia is a much better car to drive if I am honest. Maybe when they are both gone another Rolls/Bentley will be on the cards.

Here’s the pic of me, over 22 years ago, with a freshly fired, running Etype near Lingfield, Surrey - still on the tow rope. I hadn’t even driven it yet! I was kinda excited!

Useless junk that even the British Army couldn’t be bothered with. Waste of a (crap) straight eight.
