I think he swapped a VW Rabbit for a giffer mobile with PBK & regretted it.

I thought apart from the veiled PBK reference, it was pretty straight forward. But what do I know? I'm a geordie.

Owned a Rover.
Swapped for a Golf.
Hated Golf
Broke clutch
Got Mini.
More regret.

Add line:

Thought Golf would be good, but wasn’t

That surprises me a bit, because those hateful Golfs made by the most criminal fascists in automotive history are actually really good, hence I hate them even more.

I don't mind Golfs either, although I'd never want to own one.

I couldn't possibly agree more. But every time I had one as a hire car, I liked it very much and was tempted to reconsider. Then I looked at its makers and the people who own one and ran like f00k.

They are annoyingly competent. I bimbled around in one after the snow melted in Canada and found it annoyingly painless, economical, easy to drive, comfy and had everything it needed and nothing more.

It is like a midnight Tescos shopping when they keep the self check-out open. Not something that you look forward to but satisfying nonetheless.

What always impresses me are cars that have a steering gear ratio that doesn't require me to get used to it.
There are surprisingly few and the Golf is one of them.

Golfs are like these "Oddly Satisfying" videos on Youtube. I watch them occasionally, find them oddly satisfying, but would never press the 'subscribe' button.

They are the perfect car for those that have no or want no imagination in vehicles. The whole range is annoyingly competent. Even to this day, they nail it pretty darn well.

Want a cheapish, new vehicle that gets the job done while being reasonably comfortable and efficient? Buy a base spec Golf S.
Want a super economical vehicle to get the most out of your company mileage allowance? Buy a Golf Blumotion
Want a good economical vehicle that still has decent levels of performance but still get a lot out of your company mileage allowance? Buy a Golf GT TDi
Want a car that is decent and does a very good job generally? Buy a mid range Golf
Want a car that has more than adequate performance and still able to cart the kids around? Buy a Golf GTi
Want something with some eco-friendly credentials? Buy a Golf GTE or Golf E
Want a car that will keep up and even embarrass supercars from around a decade ago? Buy a Golf R

Reminds me of the Samsung product range. All reasonably good washing machines, fridges, mobile phones, diggers, etc. Just very unadventurous artifacts.

Ideal for grumpy virtue signalling fake teachers then.
