Would chainsaw oil do for the bike chain? It seems sticky and stringy enough.

I think most manuals actually say gear oil, so anything slippy & sticky will do.

I don't think it really matters, as long as you reapply whatever you use frequently.

Unbelievable how many bikes you see with rusty chains, especially with a can of chain lube, you can do it in 10 seconds.

Nice ride out to Orford Quay then home the long way. Did around a hundred miles mostly on B roads. Big smile.

Well I've found why the 14 started to piss her oil out. The exhaust was rubbing on the sump years ago and had left a weak spot. You can see it's not recent from the corrosion on it. It must have just finally failed from vibration or something as it is damn thin around the hole.

Spoken to a mate and found a good alloy welder locally. I'll get it sealed and built back up by them. That's got to be cheaper than a £250 sump pan.

The engine is still clean inside looking up from underneath and there was absolutely nowt in the sump except a coating of oil.

Well it could be a lot worse and it happened right near home so yeah I guess so.

I was surprised no sludgeyness or owt at all, I expected a bit of dirt considering the mileage. But then it's had 4k oil changes all it's life, roughly as per the book.
