Back when I was 16 the unrestricted moped had all died a death, I had a Suzuki X1-50 one friend had a Honda MB5 and another bought a brand spanking new DT50MX on an H? plate.
Everything was restricted and try as I might I couldn't get more speed out of it without spending money that I didn't have, it was the most unreliable bike I have ever had! I managed 2500 miles in a year, I swear most of them were pushing the damn thing.
Notable tuning efforts at the time by others included another X1 fitted with a 65cc kit and micron that would do 50mph, MT and MB5s fitted with the H100 engine, AR50s fitted with 100cc big bore kits...
Another friend also had a standard but reliable X1 and got a night job with a courier firm delivering up and down the A1, 100 miles a night lights were terrible on them after half an hour the battery would be flat so the indicators no longer worked and the headlight would be down to a dull glow, luckily the tail light stayed on to prevent you being mown down unseen.
I had a rider policy too £115 it was! I did once get a similar car insurance which stated any vehicle owned or not owned by me so was used as a de facto traders policy for my bikes and various cars...

I pretty much bypassed the 50 cc moped stage, although a mate & I did briefly own a Suzuki AP50 that we bought for £15 and never got running (although we sold it for £30 iirc).

I also borrowed a Honda Camino from a lass called Imogen. I rode this around for a year totally illegally with no tax, MOT or insurance. I was stopped by a plod in early December 1986 because I had a lass sat behind me on the luggage rack. The plod was in a good mood, obviously, because he just told me to push the bike home & the matter was dropped.

MZ 250s my ride to work machine, I got through 5 in all. I started with a brand new ETS 250 in about 72. £280 it was. They had no idle stop screw, a slight admission that they weren't good at tickover.
Here it is going on holiday.

Hooli, when you return make sure the rope isn't round the chain, it stretches it to fuck.

With 32:1 into the stove a nice oily fry up. Location is the most westerly campsite I could find, you'd have to be Scilly to take a bike there. I'm fairly confident no-one else has.

I went for a rideout with a local bunch off FB, it's the second time I've been out with them & might be the last.

They don't go anywhere (today was 60miles ffs), piss off every car around, manage to look like they are trying really hard without making any progress at all & generally are just embarrassing to ride with.

A mate still has his Yamaha FS1E from 30-40 years ago, unused since the early eighties, still mint.

Did a good 40 miles on the PXR50 today. One hour and a half ride with my mate on his NC50 express and another ride over to a mate, who appreciates fine mopeds, for a cup of tea. A good 2 hours riding all in.
I love it, since welding on the expansion chamber yesterday, it goes so much better and is also loud enough to upset people.

Is the PXR electronically restricted? Hits 31mph then refuses to go more?

No, it was restricted by the carb and exhaust.
Both now changed and I've gained about 5mph.

Electronic failure. Originally thought to be coil but two spares have been tried and still no spark. All the connections are in order, new rotor arm and cap also tried but still nothing. Narrowed it down to the electronic ignition failing. Combined with knackered valve stem seals, running hot, carb running rich, rear offside brake adjuster shearing off, radiator leaking and a few other niggles I think it's time to take the old boy off the road. At least that way I can rebuild the engine, carb and do a spot of wiring to it also. Bloody mirror mount fractured and snapped the other day too. MOT due in a month's time so if it's off the road it will get down properly.
