Feck off, Bub put the battery terminals back on. Besides the battery leads & the main charging wire from the alternator were the only three I didn't replace on the whole thing.

The terminal on the negative side of the battery itself melted the plastic. I have a suspicion me cracking the top may have had a detrimental effect

Getting hot is a bad connection, muck on the battery post maybe?

The earth cable to the frame from battery is a bit shitty at the frame side. Frame to engine cable was replaced in the rewire.

I would say that was more likely to have caused the problem than a cracked casing.
If it's any consolation I've seen someone do exactly the same with a brand new wagon battery at close on £200.

I did crack the plastic around the negative terminal too though. Maybe a combination as I've never had issues before.
