In my case it seems to be job and vehicle dependent. When the D3 devloped a terrible noise* I suspected front propshaft or front diff - took to LR specialists who said it was 100% fine. Took it to local garage who said the front caliper was sticking (true) - they freed it off but said they couldn't find any other fault - to be fair they forgot to bill me too.

So I ordered a front propshaft and fitted it - problem solved.

*it was quite scary at times.

As I'm supposed to be on leave and it's such a nice day I have taken the Austintatious out for a run. I haven't driven it for weeks. It started up fine and I left it to warm up while juggling the other cars to get it off the drive.
I have discovered it doesn't like sitting in traffic, I think it was getting a bit hot and couldn't hear the fan cutting in. (I whacked the heater on full to help it) Neither the temp or fuel gauge seem to work properly, so not sure if is gauges, senders, wiring or if there is a voltage stabilizer for the gauges. I shall have a look at the fan to see if it is the sender or fan at fault.
Other than the above it's a nice (if somewhat hot today) place to travel.
I came home to cool down, next for a run is the Mx5, I don't drive that either.

Two MOTs, one on an unknown recently bought for £150 Škoda Octavia, one on New Beetle Cabriolet, both passed with a couple of verbal advises...
Pair of partworn Cross Climates on Her in Doors ML, perfect for 34 degrees.
All for £165.00 including a pony drink. I’m calling that a good mornings Bangerbollocks.

Sounds almost certainly the voltage stabilizer is the place to start, especially if it's an original electromechanical one. Then work forwards or backwards from there.

Replaced points, cap and rotor ont Datty this afternoon, set timing twice over whilst getting points gap right. Went for drive, goes real well now at a pace that belies its 1171cc mill, thrashed it up a long winding hill during which I harassed a couple of Euroboxes. Got to the top and she were hot- fair enough she'd had a Tokyo tune up. Back on the flat and she stayed hot, like 80% on the dial rather than the usual rock solid halfway.
Am I being a worrysome old twat (it was 30degrees this afty) or is there a problem? All the way back home on the flat she stayed real hot. Maybe the rad wants re-coring. I did listen to the cap and it's not sealing that well- a new thermostat was put in last autumn. Maybe it's just an old 70's car with marginal cooling system? Maybe I'm going gaga?

You probably have a guage that actually reflects the real temperature, an additional 15 degrees external temperature will make a significant difference to running temperatures, if it didn't go any higher and was stable at that I shouldn't worry, you can always open the window and turn on the heater to increase the cooling capacity.

If it has been standing and you have been using hard water to fill the cooling system, flushing it out will work wonders. Yes the radiator has to be tip-top, how long has it been on? Even if the fins aren't rotten it could still be blocked inside. Re-cored radiators sadly never last as long as the originals.
