Mmmm, I suppose that 'new' earth lead was full of corrosion? It doesn't seem to take much extra resistance to stop the battery being capable of turning the starter over.

Yeah, I guess it was although it looked fine. The earth point and all fastenings were the same - just the leads swopped. I was only getting enough juice to run the clock and LED interior lights - no red ignition light, sidelights or anything else.

Got a new UCH today. Paid £30 (rather than £40) on the basis that the seller didn't need to code it in for me.
Plugged it in and used Renolink to read the EEPROM out of the old again for a fresh copy. Then dumped it into the new one with the same tool. A lot less faff than reading the EEPROM with a programmer on the board.
This worked and the car started. Only problem was that the remote central locking now worked but just locked the car and never unlocked...

An improvement but still not perfect.
Renolink essentially is a third party program that reads the DDT database. As far as I can tell, it's essentially the database for Renaults engineering tool. However it's all in French. So I made the guess that the configuration option "Clé 1 bouton" was "1 button keyfob".
Thankfully this worked!
I imagine that the older UCH configuration is a bit different than the new one the data got dumped into. So this option didn't get set and was redundant on the old.
Really tempted to make a freeware standalone application to do this. Could save many a Clio that is playing up electrically.

That's pretty cool that you can DIY that at home, in impressed that you could code a freeware version as well!

Today I found another car battery whist playing with the kids. This one was dumped in a stream in the countryside.

Its not terribly difficult to do, its just knowing what the tools are and then just using them. Everyone on here pretty much knows me as that grumpy useless bloke who doesn't really know what he's doing with old cars. However its been so long that I've been talking about fiddling with old cars on AS + here that many won't know where I earn my crust and my real area of expertise is software engineering, low level hardware development & electronics. So stuff like reverse engineering data over a CAN bus and writing a bit of software is something that I know as well as, say you making a cabinet (iirc you are a carpenter?).
I've gotten to the point of laying under old cars while trying to weld them up as flaky paint and underseal catch fire then dripping on me, is becoming a bit irritating. So I've kinda gone back to my roots/other interest of working on electronics in modern cars.
I still like old cars and I like learning about them. The very reason I started getting into them is because its the polar opposite of what I do as my day job. However right now I think I've over indulged in them...
Google suggests #bof is Business of Fashion, which I imagine is not quite what you mean?!

I was actually quite impressed with your thoroughness going through it and extremely impressed with your metal working/ welding considering where you started from. I completely forgot you did computer things for a proper job..
