Task for the day. Out at daybreak with lots of warm clothing to keep the freezing fog away. Sort out the low-speed/on full lock transmission judder on the CRV (66,000 on the clock) which has intelligent/adaptive 4WD. I'd previously been to my local garage who's diagnosis was 'Sounds like a knackered diff. Don't take our word for it. Take it to a transmission specialist'. Which I'd done. Transmission specialist's diagnosis was 'Limited Slip unit is damaged. Shouldn't be driving it. Between £1200 and £1500 to replace'.
Then by the power of t'interweb I found a Honda forum where the problem was regularly discussed, with the same advice being given....
1. Drain the rear diff oil - nasty, black, smelly with soft lumpy bits in it.
2. Refill with pukka Honda diff oil.
3. Take the car to a large vacant car park or similar space (lucky its Sunday morning; a local trading estate was deserted). Drive round for an hour or so. Lots of tight figures of eight. Lots of tight lefts and rights.
4. Leave the diff to cool for a while then drain - oil once again nasty, black and smelly but not as lumpy.
5. Refill with more pukka Honda diff oil.
6. Repeat step 3. Judder should gradually get less and eventually disappear completely.
Which, I'm pleased to say is the case. Honda diff oil ain't cheap but it's a damn sight cheaper than a replacement LSU

I wonder what the service interval is on the diff oil and if it ever gets changed? LSDs are sensitive to the right oil so it makes a lot of sense, hopefully not too much long term wear had been caused.

It's the same 'fix' for a similar LSD issue in Jeeps.

I'm surprised it had a drain plug. So much is 'sealed for life' when oil is the blood of the car.

Not today, but yesterday's work was to deliver this family heirloom back to its dry garage.

Some dodgy looking fella was staring at me so I said hello just to be polite in case he tried to rob me. This is Kidderminster after all. Turns out he had a Marina and a nice one too so I recruited him to our cult.

Not quite, his grandmother bought it new and now his father owns it. Not sure where it will end up next but it will probably be staying in the family. It's just had a paint job but I can see some filler bubbling up already...
