Re: What did you do today?
I thought hydrostatic was all purely hydraulic based. Not a Invacar transmission.
Or maybe I was presuming this to be hydrostatic.- cros

∆∆∆ Those plastic gearboxes can be a twat, be careful not to do silly things like tow uphill with them. Lawnmowers with hydrostatics can give terrible grief with this sort of treatment too. Very handy for mowing though. I used to have a very old International 574 hydro to pull a planting machine, very useful to be able to creep along almost imperceptibly, but I used to have nightmares about it going wrong.
Anyway, I finally made my van Speedo work this afternoon. What joy to be able to get the old sow off the clock at will. In what other vehicle could 50 feel like this?

Re: What did you do today?
Yeah the lawnmower build quality doesn't inspire any confidence with durability. That transmission is almost certainly CVT and not hydrostatic. Seems to be the same that is used on snow blowers and the like. No doubt a ride-on is probably at the limit of its load rating and put on this one because it's cheap to make.
I was speaking to the supplying dealer today after I went over to buy an airfilter and plug for it. He said they only ever sold three of these Atco Rider 25 and would refuse to ever sell them again. He also remembers my particular machine but was being a bit cagy about it. I said I only paid £150 for it and he remarked that was cheap enough to flog it on eBay for spares+repairs. However he also added that they definitely weren't interested in buying it back, so don't bother asking!
Lawn is mostly flat with a small dip in the middle. So shouldn't be too much trouble for it. No tow bar attachment either but I was tempted to fit/weld something on. Usefully for moving garden waste and such down the lawn. Also because I can.
I did a third of the lawn with push mower and it took about three quarters of an hour. About two thirds of a tank, so will require at least one fill up. I'm certain the lawn when I younger was larger than my current. Ride on is more fun though. Also gives me something to fiddle and tinker with. It'd be boring if it just worked, right?!

Fit backseats, then fold them down to make it faster.

Re: What did you do today?
If the belt drive packs up (which it may not- they have a better reputation than some of the hydros) there are plenty of 5 speed transaxles about. I'd guess they'd be an easy substitution and rarely give trouble.
Its depressing fixing lawnmowers as they're usually flimsy. The one exception is the Snapper with its friction plate transmission. They've been made the same for years and certain aspects are outmoded (poor turning circle being one) but they're excellent no-shit machines.
