What did you do today?

I have the honour looking after this blue mobility scooter for someone. It has now reached its 13th year and despite having covered only 60000 from new has welded itself together tighter than anything I've ever come across on my Morris.

Replacement suspension bolts are not easy or cheap to get, so I had to waste gas to get them off without knackering the heads. On the plus side the new bearing is only £13, though after 86 years the lorry is almost certainly still on its originals.

I keep seeing these pictures and think the quality of steel used is really awful.

Same with the vast majority of Euroboxes I've poked at; all the old shite I've worked on, no trouble.
It's almost as if someone wished you not to be able to disassemble them.

That being said, I was amazed at the quality & condition of the fasteners on my old VW LT35's front suspension when I changed its springs a while back. They were in fantastic condition & came apart without a struggle. Not bad at all for a 1988 vehicle.

I have to admit to being shocked with the ease at which fastenings undid on the rusty old shit we ran in Aus and NZ. Im guessing a better quality of metal must have been used as most places in NZ aren't exactly far from the sea...

I don't think the roads are gritted either in the upside-down countries, which goes a long way to preserving a vehicle.

You'd be most welcome. I had to drag the Mrs out to assist with removing the circlip. Even though the clip provided with the £13 replacement bearing is furnished with holes to put pliers in, the original isn't, presumably to save .000001p. It's useful to have a third hand to dig the shitty things out and, of course, she was only too pleased to assist...

The reason for the bearings demise looks like seal failure. By contrast the Morris uses a felt seal and this unlikely material has held up perfectly for 8 decades.

That original looks too short, I'd say the ends with the holes in have come off at some point.
