Fascinating the engineering that goes into them. How would you even start to design something like that?
From many many years of experience designing one. Also teams of people come up with the design each with their own little bit and experience on different parts. Not forgetting that there is a lot of design reuse and adaptation of existing parts between models.
Then there is all the testing that goes on from that design. Many iterations of it too. Most simulated on a computer at the beginning but then test prototypes.
But yeah a lot of work, a lot of people and why R&D costs so much.

Fucking result.
I was expecting around 2k. I was prepared to kick off at 2.5k.
£1350 all in. Very proffesional service and very happy.
Only 8 hours labour too, that's pretty quick to drop, strip & refit a box.
10 minutes they reckon to remove ,recondition and refit a rover 75 alternator.... 15 if they film it for youtube..

Is that a dsg?
Pretty sure it's a ZF 8HP. Got that in my Dodge and Jeep- the program in the Jeep is a bit ponderous but the Dodge they managed to get it spot on.
It's not often I compliment an automatic gearbox for getting it right, but that's one isn't bad at all.

Agreed, if you look at the complexity of the automatic transmission in my Pontiac- 3 planetary gearsets, 4 forward ratios, all controlled by hydraulics and modulated by driver input and roadspeed- and that's basically a 1930's design... They've had a fair bit of experience.

You take an existing successful design and complicate it resulting in something that is heavier and more complex yet less reliable, non user serviceable and will fail 2 Pico seconds after the warranty period ends.

Was that what Dollywobber was doing? I think I swapped our MGZTD one in about an hour laid on my back in the drive, did it from below, it's a bit tight with limited visibly but not difficult
