Going through my bikes and logbooks and I've got quite a few that I haven't got the red type book for. It's there any point chasing them and getting one issued? I've just got the blue computerised ones, document reference number still works to get prices for tax etc.

60mph is the speed limit for vans anyway isn't it?

Vans are supposed to travel at 10mph under the NSL except in 30MPH urban limits. However it depends upon legal definitions. Rear seats qualify the vehicle as "dual purpose" as does a crewcab or other adaptation for use other than strictly a commercial vehicle if the ULW is below 2040kg.

Commercial vehicles were at one time limited to 20mph in the case of "heavies" - this may have been to reduce the possibility of downhill runaways.

Probably the current retention of a differential in limits does indeed go back to the 50s/60s and may be revenue-linked. I know that putting windows in an A30 van and paying the due amount of tax rendered the vehicle (in the eyes of the law) suddenly capable of, and permitted to attain, the break-neck speeds that the car versions enjoyed.....
