Basic Minis did indeed persist with the bent wand until the Minispares catalogue indicates, de Luxe (ie 3 clock ones) would have remotes by then. Can't recall any reference to them in the Clubman, even the earliest cars in brochures seem to show remotes so possibly as mentioned earlier a bad retrofit. Why put an 848 in a Clubbie though? I assume the hole would still have been there with a screwed-over blanking plate but even so seems an odd swap unless somebody was brassic.....

Now you've done it. In my memory all straight levers were remote (there were different types including some aftermarket ones).
As far as I recall, all "magic wand" levers had that little kick at the end so the last couple of inches was more upright. So now I am wondering what the Mk1 Straight lever you talk of is?

Very early Minis had a straight (i.e. unkinked) magic wand - up until around March 1960ish when a bend was introduced into it to make it slightly more comfortable to use....

As I mentioned on the thread about it, the Fuel Injection needs a return line, and despite some good ideas about putting it in the fuel filler, or even modifying the gauge sender/pickup unit I can't help feeling a replacement tank might be better - even if I did have to pop the boot to fill the fucker.

In my opinion no, it looks like a pragmatic solution.

What it like overhauling the brakes (that are stuck on) on a Defender (1990)? Is anything horrendously expensive?

I don't think Defenders came out till a year or two after that, it'll be a Ninety or One-Ten.

Might make a difference if the axles got updated for the Tdi. I don't recall anything expensive when I had a Disco with much the same running gear though.

Why should you worry about that? It looks like a workable solution with the huge added benefit of being clean and untainted. Secure, too. I wouldn't think twice about such a solution in any of my cars.
