I know we have a thread called SFQ in the lentil cave, but thought maybe a vehicle only one would be useful as some people might not venture in there.
I have a question about horrible modern diesels.
As reported on another thread, my 57 plate Nissan X Fail T31 won't rev above 3000rpm and has thrown up a P0488 code "EGR throttle control circuit A range/performance".
When I removed the EGR valve for cleaning, it had clearly had a bad case of the shits.
This may have been as a result of me trying to clean it with Wynn's egr cleaner, but surely brown gunge should not be anywhere near the inlet manifold?
After cleaning and refitting, the lack of revs and fault code remain.
Disconnecting the plug to the egr seems to have 'cured' the 3000 rpm limit and the P0488 code.
Here comes the question...Does this mean the egr is fubar?
I'm struggling to understand the cause and symptoms.
I'm assuming the egr remains closed at start up and low revs, then gets a signal to open allowing exhaust gases to enter the inlet manifold. Could a non-functioning egr result in a signal to limit the revs to 3k and would disconnecting it prevent this signal? Will it remain closed when disconnected?
Don't all laugh at once, but I think this engine is shared with a diesel Laguna. It's the M9R 150PS job.

Re: Stupid questions about motorised conveyances
Can you not test the EGR valve on the bench and see it opening and closing?

Re: Stupid questions about motorised conveyances
I should have done that when it was off the car. Would I need to send it 5 volts or 12V? When I test the plug, there's 5 volts there and I don't have anything that has that output.

Re: Stupid questions about motorised conveyances
It's only £50 for a new one. I'd take a chance rather than fuck on.
Mostly because I wouldn't know how to test it.

Well you will run these posh, hard to maintain, expensive diesels.Drum wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 7:14 pm£50 is not 30 minutes work for everyone you know!paulplom wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 7:12 pm It's only £50 for a new one. I'd take a chance rather than fuck on.

Re: Stupid questions about motorised conveyances
Aye if disconnecting it doesn't cause issues, I'd jut blank it off. EGR is a bloody silly idea designed to cause problems with engines.
BTW, I think they work the other way around - at low revs/throttle they open & close when more power is needed.
