Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
Both work adequately as with my back to the sun, people did slow down when I put my turn signals on.
Heater works well though the motor needs to come out and have bearings greased and I really need an alternator that can push headlights, radio and fan at idle.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
Just ordered some more LED bulbs.
Being as the rear ones do the modem immediate on/off I got some for the front. I'll have to get a new relay but that's all good.
New bulbs also for the dome light, number plate and under-hood lights.
Basically the parking light circuit was originally 47 watts if you leave the dashboard switched on.
All LED that is 7.5 watts.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
Huge difference! I've changed all the living lights in my campervan for LED for that reason. I never actually measured the difference but when the main battery earth cable failed one afternoon I had no red dashboard lights but still full illumination inside the van.....It took me a while to realise where the fault lay as I was sure it was something on the ignition circuit.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
I showed some people and they asked "What about the headlights?".
Well, with decent wires they're 35 Watts a piece, which is less than most LED fittings, they're plenty bright when adjusted correctly.
So no, they don't need to change.

I think it is a step too far for me anyway. I like the luminosity of conventional headlamps as a part of the old car package.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
Granted, these were utterly abysmal before, with old, thin, corroded wiring, burned switch contacts and dirty connectors.mercrocker wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 7:55 pm I think it is a step too far for me anyway. I like the luminosity of conventional headlamps as a part of the old car package.
The light thrown onto the road was maybe half what it is now. Coupled with one lamp wired backwards so I had a high on one side and a low on the other and nothing pointing the way it should have been, driving it in the dark was a challenge.
The only time these aren't great is in heavy rain, but that can be said of most headlights, I think.

Same here, one thing older cars should have is a nice warm glow to the headlights not a cold LED glare.mercrocker wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 7:55 pm I think it is a step too far for me anyway. I like the luminosity of conventional headlamps as a part of the old car package.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
The car has had a few runs since having a bit of maintenance, and other than the fuel vapor-locking after being parked for ten minutes it's been good.
Put my new lights up in the workshop after rewiring things, added a couple switches because everything (inside, outside, ceiling fan) was on one switch before and that's not great, in summer it's good to have the light off and the fan on to help the aircon.
New lights are also ferociously bright.
