Ordered a replacement governor and the gasket that goes on the side pan just in case it tears.
I need to drain the atf out of it, but first I need to get a funnel and some more ATF.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
Checked the mail and much earlier than expected is the carburetor heat shield sitting in my mailbox.
Dirty but otherwise in good shape.
Cleaned up and painted. Going to make a gasket and fit it once the car's back on the floor.

It's got quite a few less miles on it. This should help significantly.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
Governor is a hybrid of the two types available. Early body with late valve. Go figure. Either way, it had some crap stuck in it and it wasn't moving smoothly. Hopefully the new one resolves that; I'm going to pull the valve block apart and clean that too because there'll no doubt be muck in there too. Seems mostly to be band dust.

Have you learned about auto boxes in a professional manner or just picked it up as you go along? For some reason autos seem to put the fear into people in a way that manuals don't

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
Manual states for all valve sliders that they should drop into and out of their bores under their own weight. That wasn't happening. The manual says to not use abrasives because of the highly accurate finish, so last time I didn't, I just cleaned them. However, the bores are so worn from use that there are small scuffs, nicks and burrs so I used a very high grit paper very sparingly to bring those down a little. Now the sliders clink clak up and down the bores smoothly.
Main valve body was similar. The three big valves there represent the governor pressure-driven portions of the system, with 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear engagement as their function. They were dirty and lightly scored so I scuffed and cleaned them up. They now move smoothly, so we'll try it again and see if it gets hung up again. If it does I'll think about replacing the bands.
It's ready to reassemble now, if I have time and inclination I'll get that done tonight.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
Never done any rebuild type work on an auto box but I have fucked a few! I have rebuilt a couple of manual boxes, the first one I did I was delighted when it was all back together to find a few spare shims, washers and circlips. Do I need to say it didn't function properly?
AFter that, I was a bit (lot) more careful and read manuals and took notes and was usually, much more succesful. Autos however, fill me with fear as they are up there with magic string in my understanding.
Yet something else I have to hate Phil about (I don't really, just envious of your car(s) location and general can do attitude.

Well, the can-do is driven mostly by the fact that I don't have thousands to spend too send this away and have someone else poke at it.
