MGB GT fettling

Our local plod are asking for speed check volunteers.
Given the number of power mad pensioners around here I expect that they'll be inundated.

Before anyone comments I know that I'm a pensioner but I'd aim a lot higher than being out in all weathers to catch someone doing 35 in a 30 limit when it should be at least 40 anyway. Now if it was persecuting JSO, LGBTXYZ cunts and so forth I'd be first in the queue.

I finally took the Inastate for an overdue MOT as I'm a disorganised muppet and hadn't realised it need a new one. It's failed, I need to source and replace both rear beam top mounts. The rubbers have become completely unattached on both so when the car is lifted the beam drops down significantly.

Nothing else apart from that, all brakes even and it went straight thru the emissions on a quick pass test.

As for the MGB, so much for the garage going thru it to make sure it was up to daily use, I may* have found the reason for the squeaking noise with the alternator under load and non starting issue after my date the other night.

Ordered one of those for the Mg. A new thermostat too as after doing the fan belt it's now only getting up to a quarter on the temp gauge.

Going to order Dizzy Doctor points and Rotor arm as recommended by SiC as probably done 100 miles now on fresh Super plus and it had Forte system cleaner sat in it for a month and a half and still fluffy on throttle less than 2k rpm.

The 405 is going back to the same garage as the Mg went so will ask the old boy what he actually did to the car while he had it. It was meant to be gone thru so it was OK for a trip to the Algarve, grease points all done, diff, gearbox oil changed etc.

After finding the fan belt and supplied high zinc oil and filter still in the car I'm not too convinced...

He did manage to fix the loss of power when warmed up in the end tho.

Always a good excuse to buy new tools. I didn't really need the Allen style torx but they'll come in handy at some point, I used the T50 on Toolstation car park to confirm it was a T50 I needed before finding the chocolate set in Midway the factors in Ludlow. After snapping one already I borrowed the impact down sizer off the Blacksmith just in case.

As it was, they weren't that tight I managed to get a junior hacksaw in to cut the old spring off too which was good, WAY easier than on the SRDT with the axle dropped a bit!

12 months motoring for 55 quid anyway, now with a fresh ticket

Until...

The alternator has decided to play up again The light will go out if you rev it hard enough but comes straight back on, until you've done about 15 miles, then it'll stay off

The Bosch on it and associated part numbers are coming on very expensive I can't seem to find a relevant diode pack to attempt a DIY repair either.

I have found a Lucas with different numbers listed too, that's bringing up a new generic thing on Ebay for 80 quid delivered.

I can't imagine it'd matter what you put on it as long as it gives enough amps (about 45amp on them?) there's nothing complicated about the electrics after all.

Very true. It's poverty spec. keep fit windows. no aircon. jus wish the fucking sunroof worked.
