Those are just some of the things it did last night, lights on the steering wheel were flashing on and off, as was the binnacle, airbag light on for the first time ever etc etc.
A full on flat out spaz attack while in the dark and thick fog on narrow unlit roads with no power steering.

I hate to say it but I reckon that sounds the death knell for it.

The fuse boxes that I have had trouble with all looked ok and I had them cleaned and any dry joints done. The one that has just had a new fuse box did do the mental thing with no throttle and loads of warnings. The dash packed up as well. It showed loads of comms faults on the body computer and in the CAN network. My guy stripped it down again and couldn't find a fault but did say there are 3 layers to it and he couldn't get at the center one to check it which is why it went to the specialist. If you thumped the fusebox things would start working again on this one. You might have more than one fault with this Volvo though.

I would just get it gone. Losing a few hundred quid is nothing like the anguish you will feel trying to trace all the faults then dealing with twats when you try to sell it.

Battery voltage off the car 12.6v. On the car 9.6v. Faint electrical smell in engine bay and alternator now hot to touch even tho the engine won't turn over.

Verdict, alternator is goosed!?

Or a live cable is a dead short? Would explain the smell and voltage drop under the load.

Less annoying tag line.

Reg/rec failure? IT could be trying to turn the alt as a motor if the diodes have gone.

I disconnected the main feed from the alternator and then reconnected the battery. Battery now reads just over 12v and sits stable at that, doesn't dive off, I left it connected for a couple of minutes and watched the meter. So doesn't indicate a dead short.

I think Hooli's suggestion is probably most likely?

Citroen ones are 25 quid posted, Volvo ones 75 quid and up. I wonder... It'll be a high output alternator because of stop start, air-con, toys etc.
