Gearboxes easier and cheaper to replace than brakes, and brakes so bad they won’t slow a car without using the gears. How do you slow down in automatic? Good God. My last word on the subject is I would be considering manifold depression and the cutting out is due to the inlet being unable to deal with a sudden change in vacuum. I’d be checking very carefully the breathing arrangements including crankcase ventilation and for possible air leaks.
When I used to run classics if I didn't change down some of them struggled to stop at times, may have been how quick I was driving them of course. When I learned to drive coaches coming down the box was needed to to keep the air up on some of the old shite I was driving as the compressors was knackered, it's a habit I've had in too many things to change now.

Has anyone know of a case where a gearbox has died early from going down the gears?

I wonder if, as an experiment, you could use some tubing to extend the pipe going into the airbox so that it was sucking air from a more stable area and not so much in the air flow.

I fell out with my daughter's driving instructor who insisted on her selecting 1st when approaching a stop sign. Even with the clutch disengaged the whole time, and a synchro box, I wouldn't want to do that without at least double declutching to match the revs to gear speed. It was horrible.

Mrs SiC does that, probably because she was taught to, but I dislike it a lot. However we've not had a busted box yet.

That E28 I had, had knackered synchros on 1st. Don't know much about its history to know if it's normal wear on those boxes or from abuse.

For me I do both, depending on the situation and car. Classic cars I go down the gears as there may be a chance I'll want to use 99% of the brakes in the near future but I don't want them too hot to begin with. Modern cars I'll throw it into gears if I'm throwing the car about. But usually I go down the gears and light braking, to anticipate the road ahead. Mrs SiC must be a light braker too as the A4 has managed nearly 40k on the same front pads.

Quietside, does it stall while still rolling or when you actually stop?

If the latter, maybe there is a loose connection that is breaking as the engine rocks forward?

Probably bollocks, but I'm clutching at straws.

We need a Cars That Refused To Be Fixed thread. I'm sure we've all had vehicles that refuse to run properly regardless of how much time and money have been thrown at them.

The amount of Fords I've had from the 80s and 90s with endless electrical problems has to be seen to be believed.
