New one should be here Tuesday and as I’m off work all week after BANK HOLIDAY OVERTIME tomorrow I should be able to get it fitted ready for madam to buzz around again.

It doesn’t grumble turning by hand so I think it’s just the brushes or diode/regulator pack, but is it worth changing that just to find out the rest of it still needs work?

I used to know a place that'd test alternators for 'not much', no idea if such places still exist though.

It could be the pulley clutch playing up. I have a CRV booked in on Wednesday for a slipping alternator clutch, fucking modern cars with their extra useless technology.

DozeyDustman's Fleet update.

I used to use a guy in Bury Lancs who repaired alternators/starters/motor rewinds. Usually £30 whatever he did. Do you have one near you?
Just when I thought I was out they dragged me back in.

not yet. Annual leave. And as I'm not in the union I can't strike. I wouldn't strike anyway, as I think working to rule is far more disruptive.

not near me as far as I am aware. Used to know 3-4 places before I moved to Sussex. I think it's the regulator pack because the exciter terminal cluster for the warning light was throwing out 11-14v on each of the 4 pins, the main terminal was only throwing out 6v. Given that it's a bit rough sounding when spinning in one direction and jams in the other I'd say the bearings are shat as well

There used to be a place in Worthing, was near the ham radio shop that's probably gone too.

There is a place in Bognor who does recon-exchange but wanted over twice the price of an eBay seller. I know support local businesses is supposed to be the decent thing but when there’s a difference of £110 and a year’s less guarantee locally to an alternator guy on the internet it’s a no-brainer.

There was also The Alternator Man in Portsmouth, but my experiences with him were not great - didn’t answer any calls, reply to any e-mails etc when the car wouldn’t charge with ‘recon’ unit on it. Has changed his eBay and website so many times since 2016 I think it’s a front for something.

The alternator arrived yesterday at 6:45pm. So much for before mid-day delivery.

Took 2 hours to get that bastard in and I’ve got to remount the dipstick tube eye correctly so the throttle body will need to come off partially to realign the mounting eye.

Then however long and however much swearing it takes to get the belt on. Measured up against the old belt it’s slightly longer (1-2cm) so hopefully it won’t be such a cowbag to fit
