What Classic ?

Post by NorfolkNWeigh »

No not a new magazine with a potential lifespan of 6 months. A pea for help and advice.
My long suffering wife has decided she wants to buy me a “ Classic car” for my recent birthday. Actually on my birthday we bought a 2014 BMW X3 as a sop to my advancing years and the closest I will get to a Qashqai or Invacare, but this was just a coincidental utility purchase ( nice and easy to get in and out mind😊)

A little bit of my boring life history , first car a Mk2 Cortina, lots of Escorts, Mk3/4 Cortinas, Capris, Zodiacs and Granadas interspersed with random foreign shite as a lad Renault 16 and 17, a couple of Audi 100s, an Impala even a Wartburg Knight and Citroen Dyane.
As you might suspect anything old with a Ford badge is out of budget ( £5k, although another couple might be found) so her romantic idea of an Orange 2000e with a Webasto , similar to the first car we had Ugandan Discussions in, is out of the window. There are a few 100e and Corsair “running projects” just needing, allegedly, a bit of tidying on Facebook and eBay. But I don’t want something tatty or not on the button,I’m to old and lazy. I need instant gratification!

So, suggestions and examples please. I’ve noticed a few 50’s saloons within budget ; Morris Six, Humber Hawk , Minx and SuperMinx etc and a lot of Morris Minors, A35s and MGB GTs which would be quite sensible from a parts and running point of view. I’m pretty much recovered from last years health issues but still struggle using the Boxster for any length of time , so a saloon built for a substantially built gentleman is probably for the best.

As the Septics say: Have at it!

Funny enough, seeing SIC’s car when we bought his TT is what made me consider them, the thought that the Boxster does everything an MGB can do, just better, puts me off. Same reason my Dad has an immaculate TR4 in his garage that hasn’t moved for over a year whilst he uses an old SLK on sunny days.

How about a nice little Lancia Fulvia saloon. It is away having new floor pans at the moment but should be pretty much up and together after that. Will need the odd bit of tinkering though as it has been off the road for years and I have only done about 50 miles in it since recommisioning it.

I enjoyed owning both but BGT is a very different car to the Boxster and a whole different world of experience. Honestly if getting in/out of a Boxster is difficult then a BGT could be a nightmare.

What about a P4? I really liked mine and found it a charming thing. Old car feel that is still quite affordable.

I do like Rovers and saw your old one when dropping off a Z4 to Zelandeth, it looked a solid old lump, but it would be a substitute for a P5for me and I’d never be content. I even looked at Panhard’s P5 advert on eBay, before realising I have neither the skill or space for a project.
My problem is I like the idea of an old car but not the reality of the dynamic shortcomings or the constant upkeep, I can see the appeal of a Singer 911, Vicarage Jag or Alfaholics Guilai , just need to win the Euromillions.

Next week, we’re going up to Scotland for a few days break and because it’s MrsN’sbirthday and she wants me to see The Northern Lights and I wouldn’t go to Iceland with her a couple of weeks ago.
We’ll point a modern Krautmobile North and expect to cruise at 80 whilst getting 40 odd mpg , in an ideal world I’d want to use whatever I buy for this sort of trip, obviously a little bit slower and more thirstily, but not much.
