I'd be looking at something from the Rootes stable, Arrow or Audax (particularly later cars with 1725 engine). Loads of improvement potential, some nice interiors in many and not bad for spares compared to some. Reasonable compromise between size and ease of entry and exit with a decent roadability.

much pre-80s stuff is a bit sketchy above 70mph on the motorway.
Bollocks.
My Triumph Herald would cruise at 90mph very happily.
As would many 60s and 70s cars.

Top speed of the most powerful herald 13/60 is 85mph. Everything else is slower....
So flat out on the level. A load of Bollocks in actually doing that for any length of time in one.
Everything else is much bigger and makes a stronger side draft from their sheer size. You really notice it when an X7/Q7/whatever is tanking past in the lane next to you.
A few years ago my Dad built a late 13/60 saloon with a 1500 Spitfire engine and overdrive gearbox, it looked great but drove like a bucket of nuts and bolts, even I wouldn’t drive it at 85 let alone cruise at 90 . He reckoned it was as “ nice” to drive as a new Herald-his Dad had a brand new 12/50 in 1969.
I well remember the Mk3 GT6 my Dad had in 1981 and how unpleasant that was on the motorway, so I can’t believe any separate chassis Triumph is pleasant on the motorway , except maybe a Mayflower !

They were accurate then. All you needed to do was work out the average between the highest and lowest numbers the needle swung back and forth between......
There's a great long bar in Rock & Roll heaven.......
