I’m still looking for an old(er) car and I’m starting to see why the cars catered to by the big clubs are so popular, the spares, advice and back up of MGs, Minors etc really makes them an “ easy” proposition. I’m currently leaning towards a P6 Rover and the plethora of clubs, Facebook groups and specialists are a big part of the appeal over even a Triumph 2000. The downside is the fellow owners in those clubs, Wannabe Surfer Dudes on the VW scene and Old School West Ham Fords, for example.

We all know what Karl Marx said about clubs…

When I had my MG the local club branch was quite good, a few bellend rivet counters but on the whole just people who wanted to enjoy the cars.

I've been a member of the MGOC for some 40 odd years, I've never met any other members nor do I plan to do so, I subscribe to the Groucho Marx view.
Parts and advice are easy to get over the web and that's all that I need.

Some of the club runs where a laugh. Plus a Midget & Sprite owners club meet at Brooklands for the 50th had a gymkhana on the remaining banking. Some* idiot in a Midget wearing a silly hat, a passenger in a silly hat & a Jack Russell in a silly hat won that & got a signed print of a Healey 100/4 at Bonneville presented by a son of Donald Healey. The second place bloke who had a tuned car & had emptied the boot etc to be faster didn't seem happy with how much I'd beaten him by

I've always said it means I can claim to be a reigning Brooklands champion as they've never re-run the event.

Sorry for the off-topic stuff Dicky, I can't imagine a Mayflower club doing gymkhanas or autotests

I think I’ve probably mentioned before , how I got disqualified from a JDC auto test whilst having a handsome lead. It was on grass around trees at Billing Aquadrome and the other entrants (only about half a dozen, which is why they called on the Tannoy for any non members to enter) seemed rather more caring about their immaculate E-Types and Mk2s than the young oik in a brand new 4.0 manual XJ6 that wasn’t his!

Radio controlled banger racing. I didn’t even know it was a thing, but it exists. Lots of Granadas, Farinas etc usually using aluminium shells but also classes for lightweight plastic bodies , of which the Mayflower seems strangely popular.
