You cannot use the old "standard" QE head 1st, 2nd or any monetary denomination - "Standard" postage stamps must be the scannable type issued at the end of QE2 reign. They get scanned and RM know they've been scanned too so you can't simply peel them off and reuse them.
These rules are changing all the time though so best to check the Royal Mail website for the latest version of the truth.
Christmas stamps are still valid it's just the machins that aren't, plus the post office will exchange the steps for new one's. You need to send them off
