A friend of mine is a green oval nut. He's always said the disco 300 rotted on the body but the chassis stayed relatively ok. The td5 though always looks nice on the body but the chassis has its issues. He has said he wouldn't mind another hippo though. His p38 v8 he's got now isn't too bad and his previous p38 diesel wasn't bad eitherScruffy Bodger wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2023 12:42 pm Amazing it holds water. Most Land Rover products have too many holes in them by that age for that to happen.

He's not wrong about the Td5, have you seen the pics of the one I was asked to weld a few years back?bub2006 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2023 12:51 pmA friend of mine is a green oval nut. I've owned three first edition and two facelift Freelanders and they are mainly rust free,Scruffy Bodger wrote: ↑Wed Oct 11, 2023 12:42 pm Amazing it holds water. Most Land Rover products have too many holes in them by that age for that to happen.
The Freelander 2 bodyshell needs careful inspection as they can rot in numerous places.

Re: Freeloading Cnut
Looking through the service book at the sellers house and I saw the last service stamp was 2017. The owld giffer had written in the subsequent three boxes with parts he’d had replaced but no mention of any basic servicing.
“It could probably do with an oil change” he said. When I asked if it had been done since 2017, he said “oh yeah, I can’t remember when but I’m sure it has”.
Well, the oil was filthy, although it is a diesel so to be expected, the oil filler cap was stuck on and two of the bolts for the air filter housing were rusted in. I had to buy a 36mm socket for the oil filter housing, which interestingly enough uses a traditional cartridge type filter, a BMW thing I believe.
Both filters were totally knackered and it was clear it had been several years since the poor car had been serviced.
6.8 litres of 10w40 later and a couple of new filters and the engine was back up and running again.
Also identified the source of the knock/rattle from the nsf- a worn out droplink. Shout out to Spilsby Motor Spares who had the socket, filters and oil on the shelf and were able to get the new droplink delivered to them for 3:30 this afternoon. A very easy job to change and at least it’s a metal one rather than the shitty plastic ones on a lot of modern cars.

Well, first start on a cold morning and it’s absolutely pissing out diesel from the injector pump.

Re: Freeloading Cnut
It’s the seals in the injector pump, a common problem it seems. You can buy an exchange recon pump for about £350, or a seal kit for £17.
It doesn’t look difficult to rebuild so obviously we’ve gone for the cheap option.
My dad has got most of it stripped down yesterday so after a couple of hours we can now see the pump. Starter motor needs to come out to get access, and while you’re in there it’s a good idea to replace the crank sensor which is hidden behind all this. So a new crank sensor is on the way, along with the special tool to extract the pump from the engine.

Re: Freeloading Cnut
I needed a new towcar, so bought this:-
£700 for a truck (Disco 3 GS) that hadn’t moved in 2-3 years after going into limp mode ( Owner claimed). Frustrated ( the bills reflect) he simply bought a newer one. Mind you - he runs an Architect firm selling Bonkers “ Grand Designs” structures - look what he lives in!
So I hoofed over in a small(er) car. Heaved in a few litres of cetane, leftit running a few mins, hitched the Aframe & headed for home ( on Trade Plates, natch!)
Dash Lights were all out @ 5 miles, running perfectly in 15. Mot’d the following day - straight pass. Emissions really low. The only time it’s used if for towing- 27-28 mpg from the 2.7 tdi. It’s a base model, no satnav, no sunroof - but that preferable for me. Less to go wrong.
I’ve added about 500 miles- no issues at all ( except DVLA mucking up the plate change).
