I don't think this is always true - look at what the Indians have done with Royal Oilfield motorbikes. They have even brought back BSA.

Yes there are exceptions - Anand Mahindra is certainly one. Enfield is really a case of it having proved profitable to continue slow development of an established icon, much the same as occurred with the Hindustan Ambassador. Indian politicians effectively killed that off though....
