Re: Sub Par Cars - 323 + 205 = 528
From my experiences of old diesels, they are more sensitive to pump timing than a petrol car is to ignition timing.

Very true. https://www.306oc.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?tid=15608 the ones on the list at the top of that page will have just had fuel and as much boost and advance as they dared I should think. Dave the destroyer loved the sound of too much advance, I forget how many engines he went thru. At the bottom of that list is Tom's old ZX, he's the one with the Merc with the daft turbo on it in my thread.
I might give the Quasar a tickle but I'm not after shortening it's lifecycle dramatically.

I tweaked my Tdi Disco, it made it a much nicer engine afterwards.

Wow, 306oc. That's a blast from the past.Scruffy Bodger wrote: ↑Mon Jan 31, 2022 7:33 pmVery true. https://www.306oc.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?tid=15608 the ones on the list at the top of that page will have just had fuel and as much boost and advance as they dared I should think. I think I was on there as me-tm. I had a white 5 door from 2010-2013 and had it running about 24psi of boost on a Bosch pump. I never touched the advance but I wouldn't say it was sluggish or sounded too bad. It would smoke like a lab beagle if I booted it from a standstill until it built up boost though.
So far on the N/A XUD in the 205 I've given it 1/4 of a turn on the max fuel screw and adjusted the idle, and removed the hilarious amount of slack that was in the 'throttle' cable. Some small part of me is getting greedy and considering more than 1/4 of a turn as it isn't smoking yet... but then that leads to what happened to my 306. It ended up in the scrappy after going bang.
I'm pretty sure it didn't put a leg out of bed, as there were no signs of holes and it didn't chuck oil out anywhere. It just went 'clunk' and lost all compression. Could have been the timing belt, which is annoying as I replaced it all (including tensioner and water pump) about a year before it gave up. In the end I didn't even check. It was a £300 car that lasted me 3 years. I just got it collected from the layby where it expired, pulled my radio and other stuff out of it and let them take it away.
It did look quite good on the 15" steel wheels off a Citroen Xantia though.
When I see the prices usable 306 TDs are fetching now, I do miss it somewhat.
Of course, a TD engine swap in the 205 wouldn't be impossible. It's actually alright with the N/A, so a turbo in one of them would be hilarious. I'd put its performance now roughly in-line with the BMW 316i I used to have. Not fast but not glacial either. Adequate.

Yep. When they've been turned up a touch and are burning nice and clean still they just seem to sound crisper, smoother and happier.

My sister sent me a link the other week to two Kingfisher Green 306's and the prices they were being bid up to was
£300 and 3 years is doing it right!

Admittedly, Kingfisher green was always at a premium.Scruffy Bodger wrote: ↑Tue Feb 01, 2022 11:59 am My sister sent me a link the other week to two Kingfisher Green 306's and the prices they were being bid up to was

Granted but 3.6K for a scruffy old dog, with a mouse eaten engine bay and worn interior as a proper project isSubPar wrote: ↑Tue Feb 01, 2022 1:09 pmAdmittedly, Kingfisher green was always at a premium.Scruffy Bodger wrote: ↑Tue Feb 01, 2022 11:59 am My sister sent me a link the other week to two Kingfisher Green 306's and the prices they were being bid up to was

Re: Sub Par Cars - 323 + 205 = 528
Lol, nope! I wouldn't get that for my 405 and that's low mileage and in really good nick for its age. Phase 1 306's have always been popular especially with Paddy's. Loads got robbed of their front ends to put on the later models too so that will have thinned them out even more. Last time I looked they were still worth sweet FA.
My old man and I ran a grey sedan and a dark blue Meridian, both turbo diesels when we were working together up and down the country, pennies to run and comfortable with it. The Meridian even had auto wipers and they were brilliant, the ones on the V50 are nowhere near as good. 90's Pugs are not 2000's Pugs.
