You weren't supposed to select first while moving. First was just for pulling away.

Ben
I personally don't because of the non-synchromesh, but sometimes first is very reluctant to engage and no amount of de-clutching, revving up and stirring helps. It's a well-known fault with these.
Stick it in reverse then first.

You aren't thinking of the original type 9 box before they changed the gearbox oil recommendations?

No. I just remember that when boxes with no synchro on first (most cars before the seventies) would sometimes need to be stuck into reverse before selecting first to knock the cogs into alignment.

A bit like the forgotten art of cadence braking.

That's pumping the pedal to avoid locking up and hence a skid innit?

I find many old cars with synchro on all 4 still like to be popped into reverse to help em into first, fuck knows why though.

1st/2nd are normally on the same shaft, cluster and selector fork (I forget which bit matters). It'll be due to that I suspect.

Even though my MGB box is all synchro I've often had to put it into 2nd before getting first.
That's from 14,000 miles old. The same is true of reverse at times. Maybe it's me but it was the same both before and after a new clutch.
