During the final stage of a motorway journey the usually dependable Austin began to falter, losing power and struggling to pull. This was on Rishworth moor M62 west with heavy rain and strong wind, not a place you want a break down at the best of times. I made it over the crest of the hill and the long descent home under light throttle was fine. But the symptoms persisted when back on load. I had a quick look under the bonnet but couldn't see anything amiss, the only recent work I'd done was to change to a winter thermostat the day before. I went out again to visit a friend and by the time I'd finished it was dark. Starting the car up the fault got worse, so up went the bonnet again. This time it gave itself away. Blue sparks flashing vividly from No.3 H.T. lead to the dipstick. Obviously I would not have seen this in daylight. I re-positioned things to get me home and today changed the H.T. leads.

Out with these shite Getes Norway leads which came in a Link Hampson packet. Can't remember where I got them from but they'd been on for a few years.

Now some proper Ripaults suppressed leads. In correct colour too. I wiped clean the distributor cap inside and out whilst I was at it. As a bonus cold starting has vastly improved; those shite Getes things must have been really bad. A simple fix for once, and normal engine running restored.

My allegro will be getting hauled out of storage this year. Hopefully it hasn't deteriorated too badly.

Mine didn't suffer any big problems but it's always the brakes which act up first. If it's been a few years it would be wise to evacuate the suspension and re-fill it.

What do you fill yours with? I know some use antifreeze

I've got some Comma Hydro juice in the garage in Carlisle. No use to me.

The clutch arm used to seize up on mine. I would free it off with WD40 then forget to grease it, then it would seize up again next year

Good point, I usually give mine a shot of oil but you've reminded me.

I have cleaned up the exterior of the Humber's block with water soluble de-greaser, ready for paint. I also cleaned the block face with Scotchbrite which has come up beautifully, so it's only some more careful inspection, to ensure no foreign matter has got where it shouldn't, then paint, and I can replace the cylinder head.

The blow between 1 & 2 doesn't seem to have caused any damage, but I never did check with a straight-edge.
