Re: Squire's voitures
Lots of gearboxes seem to like to feel the biting point in first, maybe even a wee rock forward, before they'll let you engage reverse.

Mine is fine into first but usually needs to go into 2nd or double declutch for reverse to have any chance of selecting.

Re: Squire's voitures
You only need to double declutch if you are moving.
How often do you need to change into first when moving?

A late Minor. Can't remember the gradient but it was steeper than I would have liked to have a restart on towing a caravan.

Yes, if you have to slow right down on a steep hill and don't want to lose momentum. It is no joke that many very old cars struggle to perform a hill start and this, combined with a weak handbrake, is not a situation to be enjoyed.
Well, it was by the rally spectator wallah who no doubt deliberately positioned himself at the worst point of the hill to avidly film people like me come round the bend at the bottom and grind to a halt halfway up.

Re: Squire's voitures
I used my Dad’s modern ( well Transit engined 2008) Defender to tow a big car trailer recently and he said to me “ You know you don’t need to double declutch in this don’t you?”
It’s just habit in any Land Rover for me, FFS, it was him that taught me how to do it when I was 14, now he’s taking the piss 40 odd years later.
