I've a stripped Spitfire 1300 engine the bedroom and a Herald 12/50 motor in the basement. I'm not looking forwards to moving them again...

They aren't as heavy as Squire's lump at least...

Done up Humber Snipe engine steady/tie-bar (was missing from my car). Obtained rubber bushes no problem off the shelf for a 1959 car.

We’ll see if it makes a difference, hopefully it’ll steady the engine at idle, not that it was particularly noticeable anyway.

Fitting it was a lengthy and awkward process due to poor access of one nut I had to tighten, out of sight behind the rubber bushes. My Bonney T35 with extension eventually did it. I don’t use that little ratchet often enough.

I ended up turning the air as blue as the car’s paint. I was lying under there struggling for over an hour. I also fitted the replacement brake servo and bled the brakes, so there should be no further risk of the brakes sticking on after an application. That can wait for a separate post, I have 153 miles to drive this car now.

That should be far enough to test the brakes a few times.

I'd imagine that tie-bar to be more an example of Humber over-engineering than the prosaic necessity of that on the Minor....Hope it runs well for your trip.

That bar looks like it runs fore and aft so would be to restrain the engine under acceleration / braking rather than to steady it from tortional twitching at idle (like the fragile bracket on a Minor is intended to do). Allows the use of soft (and simple) engine mounts.

Yes that’s it, the whole engine and transmission floats on only 4 rubber mountings. Now you mention it, when I removed the radiator for recoring years ago there was damage to the fins where the fan had grazed it. I don’t know what has happened to the car over the years but someone didn’t replace the tie-rod after doing something.

Been doing a bit on my station wagon in advance of GM bus museum Minor rally tomorrow. And I had a ‘helper’.

All he did was run around searching for food. Meanwhile I brushed oil and sprayed Tectyl into the door bottoms before I re-fit the door cards. Farted about fitting the spot lamp again, had to try several brackets one of which meant the bumper had to come off. I eventually settled on one which clamps like a sandwich with the bumper iron in the middle. But, during the time I had the bumper off I took the opportunity to fit the little rubber buffers which stop the valance contacting the wing and damaging paint.

I had already taken measurements from the scrapper as a reference, expecting to have to drill holes. I was pleasantly surprised to find the factory had already done this, but I did have to drill one hole due to bad positioning of the ready-made one. I’m looking forward to the rally because they have some of the old buses out running for rides. Just got to bolt in the passenger seat for my mate but I’ll do that in the morning.

Aww fluffy breeze blocks make the best helpers. I once tried to teach Bub"s thinking dog, Blu, to do wiring. He picked it up quicker than Bub
