Ordered a Mellett CHRA kit - let's see how badly I can fuck this up.

Made a start dismantling- as with previous jobs on this car I am impressed with the quality of the fasteners etc

Access isn’t as brilliant as I had hoped - the three 13mm bolts that fix it to the exhaust manifold can only be got at with a ring spanner - I have done the easy one but had to go and buy another spanner as despite having 3 13mm combination spanners, a ring spanner and 2 13mm ratchet spanners none of them was suitable.

The lower bracket that fixes it to the block is held on by star headed bolts but it’s hard to get a socket wrench in.

My joy at this progress is only tempered by the fact that it looks as if the bumper will need to come off to get at the intercooler.

Probably not easy to see in the pic, but it was a spectacular failure - about half an inch of play at the exhaust end and several bits missing from the vanes of each end.
Hopefully I can rebuild it - the casing looks OK. I thought these would be much more complex but they are actually pretty simple.

The replacement I have ordered is the entire middle section shown in the above pic so with a bit of luck it will work.

Replacement arrived a couple of days ago and interestingly the vanes are the same - I thought to look at them there were some bits missing, but it seems they are supposed to be like that. Now just need to get fucking Christmas oot the way so I can get in the garage and rebuild the fucker.

Some progress made - bolting the new insert to the exhaust side was easy after I had mucked around with the wastegate vanes to make sure they were all moving freely.

There's a little peg to ensure you put in the right place.

The induction side is a bit more tricky as there's no guidance - luckily I remembered that the bracket that fastens it to the engine block bolts onto the turbo in a couple of places and that made it line up - I also then checked the wastegate actuator rod would fit on so I reckon it's now in the right place all round.
