No deffo turbo seals - piles of oil getting sucked in and burnt.
I haven’t personally inspected it but the garage is a decent one and they say there is acres of play in the shaft - also you can hear the turbo screeching away.
Ahh fair enough, just a thought.

I would expect Mr Rainman to give you the exact ones later but I guess MaxSpeedingRods, AliExpress or eBay would be place to start. Probably a good idea to give the intercooler, oil lines etc a good clean out incase it's got debris from the turbo into the system.

Cock around in my case was having to replace the cast iron exhaust manifold middle section as the downpipe flange was fucked and it would cost more machining it/fanny around removing broken studs than just starting with a fresh one.

Also have some massive circlip pliers handy when changing the cartridge as the clip can barely be shifted if you don't have a iron grip on a pair of more normal sized ones.

Take all the usual precautions of flushing or replacing the feed lines and correctly priming them. I think some folk make a horses arse of the refitting then blame the product.

You may need a new intercooler as well. Serious turbo failure fills them with oil and bits of shit. You can try washing it out with petrol or cheap thinners. The exhaust will have oil in as well that will take a while to burn off.

Oddly enough I saw a silver 54 plate E320CDI Estate shit its turbo the other day.

I'd weigh up what a 2003 example is worth, what else it might need in the near future and take a view.

Good used turbo, £100, GBOL recon £200-250 or a new GBOL core/cassette (CHRA) for £100. The best recons and CHRA's are made by Mellett.

Me? Used turbo, wash out the intercooler.

Not the V engine - it’s the straight six. Looks decent access.
Ah yeah sorry I forgot the earlier ones were I6. Still, at least there should be plenty of room each side as the engine bays are pretty large on these.

Is it worth trying to change just the insert?
Looks like an extra opportunity for me to fuck it up.

Depends on how much damage has been done when it shit itself..... It could have fucked the casing in tiny ways you may miss....
Is the mounting for the insert still viable and not ovalled or damaged at all? You'll only know by stripping it down.
I'd bite the 100 bullet and swap it out. Theoretically the less painful option.
*all views are of the dipshit who randomly causes more damage to his piles of shit than the original fault needing inspection so are to be ignored for the reasons of sanity
