Yeah, they have this "bank robber" image and I'm sure they did very well in that role but the ones round our way were like I say, boat tugs or cheap old smokers. A big corner of our local car-breakers was given over to them, those and S Types, and the stock car boys would plunder them mostly.
There's a great long bar in Rock & Roll heaven.......

I grew up in a '70s council estate. Cars were few and far between in the '80s.

Growing up in Chatsworth Place

Number 1 had white Mk2 Escort 1.6 Ghia, followed by Audi 80 SC.
Number 2 had blue Volvo 264
Number 3 had beige Capri 1.6L, then black 2.0 S, then purple Colt Galant, then silver Mitsubishi Sapporo, then back to Capri 2.8
Number 5 had Hillman Hunter followed by Mitsubishi Lancer estate (diagonal rear lights model)
Number 6 had Viva estate and Škoda S1000 followed by Estelle 120 L
Number 8 had Cortina 2.0 GL followed by Renault 18 GTS followed by beige Mitsubishi Galant (Colt shape). Also a Renault 5 TL
Number 9 had Hillman Hunter followed by Escort 1.3 L then Ital 1.7
We at 10 had Morris Minor followed by Fiat 127 1050CL, then Renault 11 TXE, then Pug 205 Style, then modern tosh; dad had Triumph 2000 TC followed by Allegro 1750HL, then Renault 18 TS, then modern tosh. I had a ceramic blue base Escort mk3, then Nissan Pulsar
Number 12 had Spitfire mk1, Cavalier coupe, then a load of Volvo 240’s
Number 14 had XR3, then RS1600i. Previous family had a Fiat 128 3P and a Datsun Laurel 200L
Number 16 had Renault 18 LS estate

But, around the corner in Doddington Drive was the Talby family. Went to school either the twins. Their dad had a Tagora 2.2 HLS. Bastard replaced it with a Regata 100 Weekend. The mother drove a Merc 280SLC and changed that for a Maserati Kyalami. Weird old money half Lebanese lady on Bovis Home estate who had married beneath her. The twins were utter cunts to each other. Always properly duffing each other up. I had a lift in the SLC once, but no one was allowed near the Kyalami. Twins grandparents would visit in a Jensen Interceptor. Other grandparents had a Chrysler Avenger.

I am 10 again.

Let the newbie mod have it as a gentle first task. Mark it out of 10 and be disappointed but hopeful he’ll amount to something eventually.

Right 1976 .
My Dad decided he was a hippy , sold the Viscount and bought a LHD Dyane 4 and we moved from a surburban 4 bed detached near Birmingham to a 3 room ( in total not bedrooms) cottage in the middle of fecking nowhere in West Wales. The nearest village had a shop a pub and a coal yard plus about 4 noises. Emrys The Pub had a green 2000XL Cortina .Ceredig The Coal had a green D Series which I was allowed to drive when I was 12 when collecting bales during haymaking( everybody, even us had a few fields) and a tourquoise 1303 Beetle on slotmags with a boom tube exhaust, almost a 911 to me. Our nearest neighbours, a retired English couple had a brand new silver 1600 Ghia Escort - 2 door! Most people hadFords as the nearest village had a Ford agent- Johnny Jones of Ystrad Aeron.
There were 3 houses on a crossroads and all 3 had Escorts, an orange 1300e and 2 bronze 4 door mk1’s, all 3 got Fiestas as soon as they came out, the 1300e owner had an S.
Most farmers had Escort vans or Marina pickups, until the local Massey Ferguson dealer started selling Subarus , then they all got pickups from there.
In 1977 my Dad bought a Land Rover S1, an ex Civil Defence 1956 Hardtop, theDyane had died soon after we arrived in Wales and the back seat was used on long journeys as some luxury for me and my brothers, for local use we sat on the wheel boxes.
My Mum had a Simca 1000 which was probably the first normal car I ever drove, we had a second even rustier Simca for parts which I used to abuse down our lane thinking I was Roger Clark, my Dad could never work out where his chain saw petrol disappeared to. Eventually I killed the clutch in the spares Simca and me and my brothers pushed it up our 1/4 mile steep track , so as not to let my Dad find out, it was still in the corner of the field when we moved in 1980.
We lived there for 4 years and never had hot water or a bathroom, just a cold tap in the lean to kitchen and an outside toilet. My Grandma lived about 7 miles away so we went there for baths in the winter, and of course always used showered at school after Rugby and swimming- it never occurred to us that we were strange, even though I knew people with normal houses and even central heating etc.
