1968 AMC Rebel

Since I changed the side markers today (and tightened the alternator belt). I thought I'd start a thread for the poor old thing.

This the "before"

I'm not proud of this, but the old lamp was broken and I was obsessed with LEDs. This thing is one of a pair that were supposed to stick on to your door mirrors - bought from the bargain bin in the local motor factors when LEDs were ruinously expensive.

The stainless steel blanking plates were made from an old solar light that had died (running over it with my Jaaag hadn't helped)

The other side was some exotic Jap thing. I once had a post amended on the Blue for using the term "Jap" to describe a part - it might even have been this one.

I bet these were from a 1971 Toyota Crown or something else made of unobtainium now. Sadly I only have one left and though it's a nice fit, it's not right for my car.

It's not easy to see here but it's slightly bigger at one end than the other

I am really embarrassed about the amount the replacements cost - they are a present to myself and the car and are just stupid, but they are as far as I can tell, only remanufactured by one supplier.

In fact, the replacements aren't quite correct as AMC originally made the front and rear side markers as throw-away plastic units, including the lamp, whereas these have replaceable lamps.

I am not sure what they did with these when the car was imported, but I have them wired as repeaters to the indicators. In the USA they were wired to the parking lamp circuit.

This looks good, please carry on with it.

That looks much better. What you said about the lights being sealed replaceable units would explain the random replacements, if the correct parts were NLA.

This could be a good thread, I do like the shabby but still cool look to this car. It's just how they should be.

Well interested in this. I have only dabbled with Yanks (dailied a '79 Grand Prix for a few years in the 90s) but have floated around the scene long enough to know what a ball-ache getting UK-compliant lights can be! I've a soft spot for the lesser-known US marques like Rambler and Studebaker and am old enough to remember the various attempts to market Ramblers here - they had a certain following once stuff like the big Humbers and Farinas had their day. Please continue!

Well......back to the start - 2006.

I bought it on eBay from a bloke near Exeter. He had a Nissen hut in the middle of nowhere where he played with cars. He'd bought a 30's Ford of some kind and was busy ruining it so wanted rid of the AMC. I was the only bidder - bid the starting price of £2.5K just before the end of the Auction.

These are from the eBay Auction
