I seem to of done something stupid yet again

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Was just about to suggest SiC

My dad has a spot welder but it's a heavy awkward thing to use and you can guarantee something will be in the way most of the time.

I don't even have time to finish mine let alone someone else's. Plus I'm mega slow, it'd end up being another year before it was done

For anyone wondering what 300 quids worth of sidelights looks like here you go !. I am so glad I stomped up the extra and bought the long ones as the wings are recessed under the lamps so fitting the more common short ones would look shit. Royal fail did actually do their job properly with the duty on these and only charged the correct 5% I am still battling with fed ex over their rip off charge on the rear lights. Hopefully not much more required now just the time to finish the rewire and fit all the shiny bits when they get back from plating.

Always get the sender to put the full 10-digit TARIC code on the customs declaration information. Underpaid clowns looking up worded descriptions may chose the wrong heading.

Even the shorter 6-digit HS code should at least put them under the right chapter heading.

When I got my vacuum gauge from Australia, I contacted the seller to sort this code out. The first one given to me was for a multimeter, but it definitely isn't. I told them the correct code and that was used and it saved a whole world of pain of An Post being dicks and returning it to sender.

Times have changed....I used to know my way around the old printed 2 volume-plus-appendices HMC&E UK Tariff better than a Cowley parts manual or 1950s Decca 45rpm catalogue...

One thing you never did as a Forwarding Agent was take a shipper's word for the TTN number unless they could quote a Customs precedent for it. You had to fuck it up all by yourself and deal with the resultant shit if it was wrong.

Honestly, they were like the fucking Sweeney back then - summoned to some plain-clothed dock office with no name on the door and told you were Goin' Dahn Unless You Coff me ol China. I got fined more than once and it was serious fucking shit, too. I was 17 for fucks sake.

Spent a little bit of time on the Hotchkiss yesterday wiring the dashboard and having a look at the gear selection. I forgot to take pictures so you will have to wait for something exciting. The wiring replacement is coming along and all the lights will be on seperate relays so as to put less load through the switches. There is loads of room behind the dash and a nice flat bulkhead to mount everything on. Whilst this was all out I thought I would have a look at the gearbox. There is loads of movement in the gear lever and the gearknob was missing as it would hit the dashboard in 1st and 3rd. I also couldn't find 4th at all, I had been looking for a used 'box as I assumed it was something really nasty had happened inside. In the end it was a really simple fix, the bottom of the lever had worn meaning the rod was catching in the gate. 4 washers under the selector plate and it now selects 4 forward and 1 reverse gear. I just need to get a new circlip to fit the spring back on the gear lever and that will be a fix. It will make more sense when I post pictures. Some of the gears are not in the best condition with slightly chipped teeth but as everything is unavailable for this they can stay, it's not as if it will be doing millions of miles.

The bloody DVLA are being their usual helpful selves and want the Hotchkiss inspected again. God knows why when I sent photos of it with the steering wheel etc back in. Anyway it has given me a chance to get it out of the workshop and drive round the yard. In even better news the fucking rover has gone. Lost way too much on it but that will teach me to buy rover crap.

Always feel that P5s are something to be enjoyed from afar. Lovely old things but not for me. A mate, whose credentials with old motors pre-date mine - when I was swanning about in Mk2 Grannies in the 90s he was commuting in a Mk1 Consul - ended up with a nice but utterly doomed 3 Litre Coupe. It nearly broke him, almost financially but certainly in spirit. He went and bought an E34 BMW and never looked back again.
