Re: Pug 406 escapades
Got a slight issue developing. When I fitted new driveshaft I replaced crank seal but stupidly didnt replace drive shaft seals and the passenger side is leaking and has been for a while now. The issue I've got is say in driving through town and a car pulls off so traffic briefly slows I put clutch down and goto neutral ready for second but sometimes I can go straight back into third. When i do though third gear grinds as it re engages. Now I've been told by someone that it's bad practice and it will grind going from a gear to neutral and back into that gear again but it doesnt do it in any other gear and if i rev match to go back into third it's fine. I'm suspecting gear box fluid is getting low and I've got a seal coming friday and fresh gear oil is going in. Question is though is it possible third gear syncro is failing as it only grinds in that 1 gear. Its 20 quid for seal and oil so no big issue to stop leaking but should I be prepared to change the box? Wife had a vectra that had gearbox failure at roughly same mileage too (146k) so that's playing in my mind too.

Re: Pug 406 escapades
Depends where 3rd is in the box, if it's physicaly higher then low oil will affect it first.
I'd top the oil up and see. Worst happens, you rev match it.

Oh & try lifting the clutch while in neutral before going back into 3rd, that'll spin the synchro back up in the box.
Or plan better & only declutch when you really need to change gear

Re: Pug 406 escapades
I'd ignore it and just stop changing 3rd to 3rd, can't be worth enough to fix even though you like it
