Quite interesting graph this. Especially post 2000 as safer cars (thanks to Max Mosleys initiatives) became more common.
Contrary to the guff you see in the media, the UK population hasn't really increased by that much in that period. Certainly not in the order of magnitude of drop from deaths in car accidents.
Number of vehicles and them being used has dramatically increased though. Which makes it all the remarkable that deaths have dropped.

85 is a reasonable speed. Fast enough to get places quickly, not too hard on modern high performance vehicles and not so fast that the delta of speed between you and someone watching their phone isn't too great.
100-120 is "clear road" speed.

Aye, and not something I would be happy to share the roads with if it was dialled into a hundred cruise controls. All it will do is create a much higher travel speed for those not happy to sit in the flow.
This ain't Germany and most people aren't Germans - just a lot of dickheads in German cars.

Which would unrestricted motorways in the UK be?
I reckon looking at a map:
• M4 after Slough or maybe after Reading
• M3 after M25
• M20 maybe but lorries too stacked
• M5 apart from around Bristol, Birmingham and Exeter
• M6 north of Lancaster
• Most parts of M11
• M40 for most part out of M24
Rest is too short, too populous (tailpipe and sound emissions), far too congested or wide enough for supporting such a road.

We're in more danger of it getting lower with all the 'reduced limit for air quality ' bullshit you see these days.
I'd rather see all the 50 limits scraped where it should/was NSL and the NSL raised to 80mpb or 100mph on motorways
Then when there is an accident, blame bad drivers and charge them with careless/dangerous driving rather than the lazy way speed is blamed currently.

Max speed ive ever done was just over 160 in my Renault 21 quadra that was 'fixed' by turbo technics, on an autobahn.
Greatest as a passenger was 180 in an Aston Martin zegato at about 3am on the M6.
I had a good journey back from Edinburgh on Monday. Managed 110-120 on most of the M74, and the M6 until Blackpool.
Fastest in the UK, was bouncing the speed limiter (155), in the bmw on a big hill on the M6, at about 7am on the way to a funeral with the family asleep in the car. Dropped back to 100 once I had hit the max.

80 or 90 tbh.Warren t claim wrote: ↑Fri Sep 02, 2022 7:59 pm ... then how fast would you drive/ride on a clear motorway?
It's not me or the car, it's the milliions of clueless sandal wearing halfwits in Mokkas/Crashqais/Jukes/Shitroens/Peugeots/Vauxhalls (except Insignias?) and those appalling Ford EcoSport cabbage chariots. I followed one of those shitheaps yesterday. Lovely bright day, gormless 70 year old bloke 'driving' with the rear wiper operating, grinding away at the rear screen, totally oblivious.
This is how it should be:

I once did 150 on the A34 in a V212 XJ-S manual in order to outrun the filth in a 24v Senator.
I won, btw.
