I’ve ‘ bought’ a tired old Master….

Post by NigelBickle »

Advice needed, peeps, pleez.

My kids have agreed to buy ( seems I’m paying) for a 220,000 mile 09 Renault Master diesel van. Don’t ask, just don’t…..

But before I’m required hand over the shekels, I’ve decided I need to be there. So, what should I look for - what are their ‘ areas of concern’ - at least with a view to it getting us home? I know the square root of knack all on these.

Thankin you.

Here it is, in all its glory.

I think Panhard65 has quite a bit of experience with this age Renault van iirc.

Yeap that the same as my pile of shite. They are usually pretty good if looked after, main things to look for is rot and the engine light on. The 6 speed gearboxes give trouble and you also get all the usual issues with modern diesels like dual mass flywheels and dpf's. It should run smoothly with plenty of power as mine does go well until it hits 3000rpm when it will start fucking about. I will one day get to the bottom of what is wrong with the fucker but just can't be arsed to even look at it at the moment. The 2.5 with the 5 speed box should be the more reliable option but as with all modern tosh they can all find new and exciting ways of emptying your wallet. Saying that mine is quite economical when it is running right I can get high 30's out of it, but I never go over 3000rpm.

Thanks for that. It’s motd to April & no signs of grot in its mot history, so possibly ok there.
Engine light will probably be on. What’s that likely to mean? Is there a simple cheap fix?
Currently no clue on the number of cogs in the box,but Imsure I’ll find out soon.
Hey- ho.

Injectors and pumps are the worries with an engine light as well as all the usual egr type shit. It does make it more and more important to take a code reader now when viewing any motor just to see what has been shitting itself and prompted the seller to fuck it off sharpish.

We tried to load, but it wasn’t safe, so it’s paid for - & still there. Seems to drive alright so that’s what I’ll be doing. 100 miles & half the M25

Whilst there, I was offered this:-

Seemingly abandoned by a tenant, it seems to be a low mileage relatively clean swb. Sadly the quarter light is smashed( to gain entry) no docs, no keys and someone has made a Horlick of every lock& ignition. They think there may be an immobiliser on it - but it can’t be that difficult- can it? Oh and a dented screen - I thought frustration, owner says roof tile. Hmm?

Anyway,£200 & it’s mine so we’ve agreed I’ll apply for a V5c & see what happens. If that eventually comes through without Rozzer activity, the’ Owner’ is happy to write me a sensible receipt- so another trip north with a trailer on tow. Probably in November…

Deep joy

That's got to be a bargain, there's probably somebody on eBay selling uncoded ECUs with the immobiliser removed.

Well, some 3000 miles on the Master has ,so far, been behaving itself. Always starts, economical for a van, reasonably spritely and quite comfortable. I’ve 4 lights up, on the dash, but I’ll be investigating them next Spring - unless it goes haywire first! I filled it from near empty (@2 galls) to full, tonight. £194! Bloody hell!

Anyway, I collected that Trafic today

I thought A framing it around the M25 a bit ‘ meh’, so dug out the dolly & it only just fitted.

Anyway, it’s registered to me now, I’ve spoken to the ‘ missing’ tenant/ owner & he has no interest- but the keys! Sadly the locks/ ignition are all so mullered there’s no point. I’ve made contact with a mobile locksmith who saves he can sort it for £160 (& vat) so I’ll go with that. It has 56,000 on it, and looks it so hopefully ok once the neglect/ damage/ vandalism is sorted.
And if it’s knocked it’s bearings out? Well, I think @£500 ish, I’d get my money back. Hope it won’t come to that.

Renault vans are pretty good and certainly better than Transhits, far less £££ than VW stuff and better to drive than either. Injectors are an issue on the later Trafics and they can seize into the head. But if you can get it fixed and on the road for under £2000 you’ve still done very well.
