Ahhh the joys of British Leyland. There again this fucking Mercedes I have here is not covering itself in glory. I wonder if I can find an SU carb to fit it as the Pierburg copy of a Stromburg they had from new is total shit. No one will recondition it either, probably due to the extra electrics fitted that are all no longer available.

Good shout. They do have locking nuts but (hopefully Panhard65 isn't watching me admit this), these old lumps aren't exactly the smoothest of running engines in the world.
I set it up with a colourtune last and set them on the slightly rich side deliberately.
Also possibly of note is that after a high speed run and giving the engine a good spanking, the idle revs increase by a good 200rpm. Sat in traffic idling will bring them back down to around 850rpm eventually.
If I was quicker thinking, I'd have pulled the choke when it started playing up.
My Midget always did that with the idle too, must be a SU thing. I never worked out why.

SiC has this got a solid state fuel pump fitted? Those plugs look ok to me but as had been said modern fuel burns differently. Could it have got some water absorbed by the fuel while it was parked up and a blob is floating about in the carbs?

Yes a hardi pump.
Carbs are HIF4 so bit of a pain to get to the float chambers. I've not let the tank run down that low though, so shouldn't have sucked anything up. Also been mostly using Esso Super (so 0% ethanol), so shouldn't have absorbed anything either.

The carbs on my 1850 used to unbalance for fun as well. No amount of locking nut can combat the rattle of a BLMC engine.

Sack it off and buy something more reliable with fuel injection. Something like a pug 107. Jap engine with no frills.
In fact I'll do you a swap if you like..

Just remembered after looking at the carbs, the mixture screw has no locking nut as it's a HIF4. Idle speed don't either, just a spring to keep tension. Out in it atm and definitely feels a bit down on power. I'll check the balance and mixtures once back home.
