I bought my awful coloured MGB in 2007 with a stainless exhaust, and it's still there. Unfortunately last year's conversion to telescopic dampers revealed that the modified lower bracket hits the pipe, probably exacerbated by towing a caravan.

Am not looking forward to splitting it up or to bending the pipe to correct the problem.

At least I'll replace the clamps and rubbers which were on their last legs.

I resolved that on my Victor by mounting the blinker unit on the firewall. Originally it was clipped to the steering column and that was useless- gluing it to the firewall acted like a sounding board and made a nicely audible plik-tonk when the indicators were on, good because the auto-cancel on that didn't work.

That shouldn't be too hard to get apart. It is difficult to describe but if you tap the pipe with the splits in with a hammer all round first, not trying to drift it off just hitting the side in a few places enough to loosen it but not too hard as to dent it. Now if that makes sense it should help. Good luck !

I put wood above and below the pipe to keep it firm and with some gentle wiggling the joint came free. Will do your suggestion for the other joint tomorrow as it's easier now that the section is off.
The pipe is badly pitted, doesn't look very stainless to me. Might weld a new bit in instead of a patch.

Different grades, different properties.

I see rusty brown marks on our stainless cutlery that has been in the dishwasher.

I made that mistake with some stainless steel hubcaps for my VW T2. That was 130 quid down the drain.

Some heat helps split those exhaust pipes.

WD40 into the joint don't arf help getting the stainless pipes apart. just about the only thing it is useful at.
