Ours was bought out of necessity with no intention of hanging on to it long term but it’s been such a faithful old thing that we’ve been unable to bring ourselves to sell it.
Nearly 140000 on it now and only cost us £1800 at the time.

Well I agreed to buy it for £800 which is more than I wanted but I have a customer in need of a good car who I know will look after it. Her MGF should of died 4 years ago but she keeps throwing money at it. Now the poor old MGF will get put out to pasture literally, she has horses and it is off to live on the farm for her grandkids to play with apparently

I think these will attain classic status. I can tell you, my mate, a former senior chassis engineer for a failed car firm in the West Midlands has owned one for donkey years. Loves it. Its the car the first Freelander should have been.

Ours certainly doesn’t drive like a twenty year old car. Even with its mileage the engine is smooth and quiet and the auto box functions better than some modern cars I’ve driven.
It does like a drink if you hoof it on though.

I paid £500 for the 03 one I bought from AS ( friends of Catsinthewelder) They'd been offered £100 for it trade in on a brand new RAV.

I'd have another.

Slightly off topic, my neighbour has a 58 plate 5 door diesel that's just clicked over 8k miles. His dad bought it and sadly died shortly afterwards. Its dry-stored and used periodically. I can't see that one being a classic not least because the diesel wasn't that reliable to start with.

A fella at work bought the first model brand new. In that kind of violet colour, I thought then it might be tipped for classic-ness because of some of the design details. It wasn't the first soft-roader but had that kind of kerb appeal. Later models seemed a little more main-stream. I never drove it but did ride in it and was actually quite impressed at its lack of pitch compared to say a Sportrak or SJ.

If you want a weird soft-roader then get a XC90.
